Term 2 Week 10 Reflection--Jun Jie

During our post exam activity, we were briefed on what was going to happen after the school holidays. We were told to post a photo of our product, our report, photo of our group, our presentation, and our video on the blog for the final post. I have assigned Jun Rong to assign us on what to do for the report while I work on our product.

Term 2 Week 9 Reflection--Jun Jie

In this week, we were told to make a presentation for our ipw project. I have assigned Isaac to create the skeleton of the presentation, send it to me for editing before we finally post it on the blog

Term 2 Week 8 Reflection--Jun Jie

Like the previous week, this week is also our examination period, therefore we were not able to meet up. I will be discussing with the other group members on how to find a suitable fish tank, as this is our only missing item.

Term 2 Week 6 Reflection--Jun Jie

In this week, I have allocated the various task for each member to do, such as the gathering of all our research and the making of our presentation. I will be making the model once I managed to find the suitable fish tank and fan.

In this week, we have not completely collected all the materials. We have thus discussed the various places which we can buy the materials, such as Sim Lim Tower and other electronics shopping malls. The 2 items that would be of difficulty to find is the Tank and the Blades of the fam

Term 2 Week 4 Reflection--Jun Jie

In this week, I listed down the things that we needed to collect to build the model to show the concept of hydroelectricity. The materials are as such:

1) 4 bar magnets/a big cube magnet

2) 1 large U-Shaped magnet

3) 1 electrical light bulb or a LED Light

4) Wires

5) Blades of the fan

6) Big Plastic fish tank

7) 30cm Metal Rod

We will gather the materials by 30th April, and I will create the product on Labour Day. Isaac is left in charge to create the powerpoint of our presentation

Term 2 Week 3 Reflection--Jun Jie

In this week, we managed to collate the data of the survey. As there is an equal percentage (50-50) in the question "Do you think boats are useful?", we decided to just make a model that shows the concept of hydroelectricity.

The model will be based on what happens in a dam, like the different parts and processes. We are currently looking around the web, looking at how others make their miniature models of the dam and models that shows the concept of hydroelectricity

Term 2 Week 2 Reflection--Jun Jie

Term 2 Week 1 Reflection--Jun Jie

As our IPW lesson fell on E-Learning Day 1, we did not manage to discuss anything. We also did not manage to meet up due to the assignments that were given today

Week 8 Reflection--Jun Jie

In this week, we publicize our survey by posting the link in websites such as facebook and emailing the url to our friends. So far, we have collected 10 sets of data.

We hope to collect at least 40 by the end of this week.

Week 7 Reflection--Jun Jie

In this week, we further discussed on what our survey questions should be as well as how we are going to make it. In the end, we decided to use google docs to create the survey, and ask our class to do it as well as some of our relatives and friends.

However, up till today, we have not archived our target number of audience

Week 6 Reflection--Jun Jie

In this week, we were to create a survey to find out the public's view about hydroelectricity and the application of boats.

What I know about surveys:

I know that surveys are used to collect information about the subject it is surveying about. It is used to find out the view of the audience/public for either suggestions or improvements. It may also ask about the opinion of the audience/public about the subject. Surveys are flexible in the sense that a wide range of information can be collected.

What I think about surveys:

I think that surveys are extremely useful in terms of getting and collating information as it is very easy to administrate and collate the data. I feel that surveys that just involve "yes and no" questions may be less effective in collecting these data.

What I found out in the survey:

Because our group has not completed publishing the survey, we do not have much information. But, we now know about what we need to find out from the public.

What I can do after the survey:

Even though we have not created the survey, we expect to collate the data and present it in a form of a pie chart for questions that asks about the audience's opinion. Also, with the data, we will have a better understanding about what we would have to do and would be able to proceed with creating our product.

Week 5 Reflection--Jun Jie

During this week, we planned on what we were going to do for the following weeks to come, planning the schedule of our project. We also assigned research topics for each one of us to research on.

The topic I was suppose to research on is: The Concept of Hydroelectricity

Due to the Chinese New Year, our group reflections may be posted later than before.

Week 4 Reflection--Jun Jie

Due to our secondary 2 adventure camp this week, we missed our IPW period. However, we still managed to meet up just yesterday to discuss on the 4 main points of research/guiding questions. They are as follow:

1) What are the materials needed to built the boat?

2) How do we prevent the boat from sinking?

3) What is the maximum pressure on the ship before it feels strained?

4) The amount of force/electricity needed to be generated.

However, we also have other important sub-research questions, such as:

1) How to connect the turbine without using wires?

2) How are we going to find out the amount of electricity needed?

3) How are we going to counter the irregular frequency of the flow of water?

4) What are the properties of different turbines?

5) What are the standard rules for building the ship?

6) What are the factors that put pressure on the hull?

Therefore, the main 4 research questions are already split equally among the 4 of us (1 person research on 1 question). As for the sub-research questions, we believe that while searching on the main 4 questions, we will also be able to find the answer to these questions.

Week 3 Reflection--Jun Jie

In this week, we have discussed on the main focus of the project, which is to give the members a better understanding of hydroelectricity and its concept, like how to calculate it and the factors affecting it.

Some questions that are still going around in my head:

What materials are we gonna use to replace those that are used on an actual life size boat?

How are we going to substitute the turbine with a turbine that is smaller?

3 things that I learnt:

1) The formulae to calculate hydroelectricity is P = ρhrgk

2) The turbine that we have to installed is known as Hydraulic Turbine

3) Water turbines are divided into two groups; reaction turbines and impulse turbines.

Ideas I agree with:

In order to power the boat, we have to find the amount of energy required to run the boat first before we can find out the speed at which the boat should move in order to gather enough water which would turn the turbine.

Week 2 Reflection--Jun Jie

In this week, we have decided to work on the Theme of Champions of the Earth (Saving the Environment). All of us has been assigned a question which we are suppose to research on and talk about it the next IPW lesson.

What I already know about this topic:

Under this topic, I already know that the earth is suffering from Global Warming, which causes the melting of ice caps, causing floods and arctic animals, such as polar bears, to lose their habitats and become endangered. Therefore, we have to find a way to reduce the effect of Global Warming. We have decided to invent a Hydroelectrical power boat, which uses both the concept of kinetic energy and hydroelectricity.

What Questions I want to ask about this topic:

What are the structures of a boat which allows it to float?

How is Hydroelectricity calculated?

How is Hydroelectricity converted to the electricity needed to power the boat?

How does the kinetic energy convert into electricity to jump start the boat?

What materials are used to make the turbines and engine of both the boat and the generator.

What are the subject/skills I can make use of:

I can use the skill of research to know more about the topic. I can also use innovation to think of replacement objects to replace the actual objects used to make an actual life-size boat.

Where can I go to find information for our project:

I can learn more about the subject at the NLB, or the MRL, or even the internet from websites such as wikipedia.org

What do I want to prepare to tell others about out project:

I am required to prepare to tell my team members about the concept of hydroelectricity and how it is being calculated, as well as the amount of electricity we need to power the boat.

Week 1 Reflection--Jun Jie

In this week, we have not done much. All we have completed is deciding our group name, which we concluded should be "The Eco-Champs", and assign roles to each members. We have also decided that our theme shall be "Champions of the Earth". 

Currently, I know that the earth is suffering from Global Warming, which causes the melting of ice caps, causing floods and arctic animals, such as polar bears, to lose their habitats and become endangered. 

Therefore, I would like to find out ways to make our future a "Greener" one by finding out ways to reduce the amount of Carbon Dioxide emissions from vehicles. I will therefore research further on both Global Warming and How to prevent it from happening, besides conserving energy by using green energy like solar or hydroelectric energy.

Here are the ideas of our project (our group has decided that each one of us shall think of at least 2 ideas for the project, and we will then vote for the best one to be carried out)

1) An object to either absorb or dissolve the carbon dioxide emissions. (Something like an air freshener, but an air freshener only refreshes the air and does not remove these emissions.)

2) A "membrane" type of material that would prevent the carbon dioxide emissions from coming out of the car. (Like a filter paper, but instead this blocks the gas from escaping)

3) A hydro-electrical Power Boat
